BILAT WIKI - PROVIDING GUIDANCE TO RESEARCHERS
BILAT
USA 4.0 European and US partners have juxtaposed
EU and US terminology of funding mechanisms and grants
management at both sides of the Atlantic within this Terminology MediaWiki for
researchers, research managers and administrators to better understand each
other, the global funding landscape and to fully exploit transatlantic funding

During 25 - 29 June 2018 we hosted a series of webinars for the
American research and innovation community as well as the partners in Europe. The
webinar week provided in a concise way some basic information on four key
research and innovation areas in the programme:

- Nanotechnology, advanced materials, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing and processing
- Transport
- Marine and arctic research and technology

TRANSATLANTIC RESEARCH COOPERATION TO TREASURE & PROTECT THE ATLANTIC
OCEAN
On June
6, 2018, during the Capitol Hill Ocean Week in Washington DC, BILAT USA 4.0 co-organized
the "Transatlantic Research Cooperation to Treasure & Protect the
Atlantic Ocean" held in the Woodrow Wilson International Center for
Scholars to celebrate 20 years
of the EU-US Science and Technology Agreement and 5 years of EU-US marine
research cooperation.
This
event brought together European and US representatives of industry, science and
policy to identify the best ways for science to help us treasure and protect
the Atlantic Ocean, to keep it healthy and productive and, to understand and
tackle the issue of plastics in the ocean. You can check our special newsletter edition here.
The event included in the
afternoon a visit of the Ocean Plastics
Lab which graphically presents the problem of plastics in the Ocean by
leading visitors through different sections of the exhibit to see the waste,
detect its impacts, and examine potential solutions.

BILAT USA 4.0 BRAND NEW LINKEDIN GROUP UP AND RUNNING!
Our brand-new LinkedIn group is
now an excellent opportunity for exchange on open topics among its members. It

2018 FIU WATER AND ENVIRONMENT SECURITY CONFERENCE.
During 17th-18th
September, 2018, a two-day conference on Water
and Environment Security was organized by FIU Institute of Water and
Environment at Florida International University, Miami. Along these two days, university-wide centers, research programs, scientists,
and engineers met at FIU to tackle regional, national and global water and
environmental issues, through interdisciplinary research and cutting-edge
technology.
The conference
served as a platform for the formal presentation of the newly established
UNESCO Sustainable Water Security Chair at Florida International University
(FIU). The event brought together international experts on water and
environment in an effort to address regional, national and global water and
environmental security issues. It highlighted global challenges and
opportunities, including special sessions dedicated to Africa, the Caribbean
and Latin America.

Jean Monnet Center of Excellence Associate Director Christine I. Caly-Sanchez
was proud and honored to participate and be the "Challenges and
Opportunities in Europe and North America" Session Chair.

USA workshop on the Main Funding Schemes of the European Union: GUIDING
PRINCIPLES
From September 25th to October 1st, 2018, BILAT USA 4.O EU
funded project carried out a workshop on the Main Funding Schemes of the
European Union: GUIDING PRINCIPLES in Atlanta | Chicago | Tempe, USA.
The facilitators were Annika Glauner (ETH Zurich), Jennifer
Ponting (Harvard University), Nicolas Schulthess (ICFO), focusing on
participantsÕ gain of an understanding of H2020 and its implications
participating in a project. They learnt how to engage in H2020 projects, how to
read calls and build up a respective proposal.

BILAT USA 4.0 at the 2018 Water JPI workshop
BILAT USA 4.0
activities to promote programme level cooperation among European and US
American federal funding organizations were presented during the 2018 Water JPI
workshop titled ÒStrategies for International CooperationÓ, which was organized
in Vienna on 19 September 2018 within the IC4WATER Initiative that is a H2020 coordination and support action
dedicated to the development
of international cooperation in the Water area.
Around 30 participants representing JPIs, ERA-NETs
and other FP7 and H2020 initiatives shared briefly their relevant international
cooperation activities and discussed the challenges and opportunities for
international cooperation.

Within the
BILATUSA4.0 Project 2 Missions has been organized to Europe and to USA between 2016 and 2018. Findings and
recommendations to enhance synergies and alignment of funding programmes
between Europe and US will be available by November 2018.
BILAT USA 4.0 organizing a high-level mission to the EU
From the 6th to the 9th of
November 2018, BILAT USA 4.0 will lead a visiting delegation of American
business associations, research and innovation networks, and cluster
organizations representing 8 U.S. states to the European Union (EU).
Participants in the event will spend four days visiting over 15 cluster
organizations in Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

INDustrial TECHnologies 2018 - Innovative
industries for smart growth
From the 29th-31st October, INDustrial TECHnologies 2018 will bring
together industry R&D experts, SMEs, and researchers with a shared interest
in nanotechnologies, advanced materials, biotechnology and advanced
manufacturing & processing (NMBP).
The
conference will present highlights of new industrial applications for these
technologies and provide a stage for finding R&D&I partners for the
upcoming NMBP-calls 2019 and 2020 in Horizon 2020. It will specifically support
match-making. The conference programme focuses on 3 threads:
- Technologies for sustainable growth
- Innovative industry for citizens
- Ecosystem and framework conditions
